Athletic History

1932: Rev. John Sheehy establishes youth athletic program at St. Mary’s Parish on the East Side, the first recognized parish athletic association within CDOW.

1935: St. Anthony’s Catholic Club forms committee to review need of formal body for sponsoring all Catholic Athletic League activities in Wilmington, Delaware. The Catholic Athletic Council was officially announced under the direction of President Thomas L. Bland to oversee the Catholic League for basketball, bowling, softball, and baseball at parochial schools.

1939: Catholic League under the CAC rebrands to Catholic Youth Organization (CYO).

2000: The Office for Youth Ministry and CYO rebrands to the Office for Catholic Youth Ministry (CYM).

2003: Office moved from North Broom Street and incorporated into diocesan offices on North Union Street

2006: Joseph McNesby awarded National Youth Ministry Award in Athletics at NCCYM.
